By nuts I mean great. Pistachioey, like that monarch of nuts. Pithier, more colorful, more to make you squint and say you damn right thats nuts
Fuzzy, synthy, reeling, bluesy. Crawling blue ice age, moving at the menacing pace of my pessimism.
Or if the tracks aren’t frustratingly airy, they can be downright clunky. Take the single “Your Life is a Lie” – yeah, the candidness of the lyrics and their laconic brevity have a lot to do with the track title and the sudden revelation thereof, except the repetitiveness of it blunts the whole message. It strives to be this barrage of wake-up calls, but by the end of the song it’s just become white noise, and I’d be amazed if you weren’t reaching for the skip button. It’s a real Bible-thumper of a track: “Count your friends / On your hands / Now look again / They’re not your friends.” Cue jaw-drop.

This song makes me giggle most embarrassingly. Also, I read this about them on Wikipedia, it made me laugh:
“Mike and Robin were Clive’s friends rather than each other’s. Without him as a buffer, they developed a robust dislike for one another. Fortunately, the quality and quantity of their songwriting was roughly equal. Neither would agree to the inclusion of a new song by the other unless he could impose himself on it by arranging the instruments and working out all the harmonies.”
“Alone Again Or” – Love, Forever Changes
one of Jim Morrison’s fav groups
“I think that people are
The greatest fun
And I will be alone again tonight my dear”
“Dogon Genesis” – Lumerians, High Frontier
New track out from Lumerians, from upcoming album High Frontier due out August 6th. It’s more of the same Lumerian sound: droning organ riff in the back, cryptic and monotonous vocals, giving space for free-improv. Decent song, un-outstanding but decent.
Ahkiyyini – “See the Light,” Enter Xibalba
Saw these guys on Sunday at LA Psych Fest (which was PHENOMENAL, don’t miss it next year), they were the balls. There was a really swoony, flowy, hippie-mosh thing going on while I was watching the Insects vs Robots set, then I leave, come back to see AHKIYYINI, and the hippie feels was gone, replaced by some frantic Dagon-worship vibes. It was terrifying, it was exhilarating, it was beautiful. Downloaded the free EP on their bandcamp, the whole thing was of similar quality (Check out “Ascension of the Tyranadon”), going to buy Enter the Xibalba, no hesitation.
Dahga Bloom – “Black Lung”
hard tab-dropping squirrel nut beefheart
I saw an internet ad for an event called the 2nd Annual Psych Fest, and thought it’d be nice hookups for good contemporary psych acts. Turns out that nearly all of them are gold, exactly the kind of stuff I’ve been looking for, just groups that can hold a melody and make it sing ten ways a jam.
Case in point, Dahga Bloom, combining the least cheesy but most jam-savvy parts of Hawkwind, Beefheartite humor, and the magic fuzz. I am so looking forward to watching this onstage.
