I wrote a review for psych-ambient group Woodsman’s new self-titled, released day before yesterday.
“. . . I had the impression of beginning in the woods and ending up elsewhere, a good sign for a psychedelic recording. It reminds me of a fantasy series, Roger Zelazny’s The Chronicles of Amber, in which the main character arrives on other planes by walking and simultaneously imagining the destination piece by piece, subtracting elements that don’t fit, thus shifting the landscape around him until he has arrived at the place he’d envisioned. It’s a good model for how each track tends to progress – movement in pieces, like clay being shaped.”

“Eggs at Night” – Damaged Bug
If you only heard one song on this list, make it “Eggs at Night.” It’s John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees playing with drum machines and synthesizers, to heartbreaking and oddly danceable effect. I can’t even, I just . . .
“Take Away These Early Grave Blues” – Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
A Godspeed You! Black Emperor side project, with much more freneticism and shouting in the streets than you’d expect from such a thing.
“About Blank” – The Dictaphones
Suddenly the rubiks cube’s squares turn to rubber, to rubber lips, turns to you, and speaks in synths.

The last time I saw Liars was at a mini-festival called Culture Collide. They were playing in a headliners’ timeslot, but judging from the ridiculously small crowd, I’m guessing they were more that weird band at the end of the night that you can see if you’re not into the actual headliner.
He’s called Damaged Bug now that Thee Oh Sees are on hiatus, and the single is so, so gloriously fun. And completely different from TOS as well, though with the same Dwyer energy. I can tell. It’s that pink/green funk coming out of the exoskeleton.
